Border to Coast Pension Partnership (BCPP) Fossil Free

Is your local council pension fund one of 18 in the new BCPP megafund?

If you pay council tax in one of those areas, or are a member of their council pension fund, some of your money ends up invested in oil, gas and coal.

And from April 2026, the Border to Coast Pension Partnership (BCPP) is the megafund that makes those investments. The BCPP Fossil Free campaign was set up to make the case that this huge organisation has the power and expertise to protect pensioners’ futures, not destroy them.

  • BCPP has projected assets of £110 billion, with approximately £2.5 billion invested in fossil fuels.
  • It has led shareholder rebellions (including the biggest in BP’s history) and won awards by developing innovative approaches to investment
  • But it needs to go much further and faster, if its funds are to serve the interests of pension fund members rather than fuel companies that are backsliding on their Paris Agreement targets.

All local pension funds are part of the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS), which invests £16 billion in fossil fuels. It is one of the largest defined benefit pension schemes in the world, with members from 86 local authorities and other employers including schools, cultural organisations, universities and national parks.

For all our sakes, we must end fossil fuel investment by BCPP – and by the other five megafunds – and switch the money to UK infrastructure, local sustainable alternatives and green jobs.

  • The BCPP Fossil Free group meets monthly on Zoom – you’re welcome to join us
  • And you’re invited to our special online discussion for people linked to all 18 pension fund areas. It’s on Tuesday 19 May 2026 at 7.30pm – just email for the link

Lots of us campaign in several climate groups, as you possibly do, too. Don’t worry if you don’t know anything about pensions (although if you do, that’s also very welcome). We’ve all had to learn from scratch and are happy to buddy new people. Our campaigning activities include letter writing, putting questions to the BCPP Joint Committee, petitions, working with the Better Pensions Coalition, demonstrating, meeting with officers, councillors and MPs. We will welcome people who enjoy the behind-the-scenes admin and in-depth research, as much as the placard carriers and councillor lobbyists.

Now’s the time to act to ensure our taxes and contributions are invested in sustainable local infrastructure, not risky fossil fuels that jeopardise our futures.
